Hippocampal connectivity in illiterate adults from Brazil

چکیده
Abstract Background The role of hippocampal connectivity for good memory performance is well known in persons with high educational level. However, it understudied the illiterate populations. Methods Thirty‐nine adults underwent resting state functional MRI and an episodic test (Free Cued Selective Reminding Test). We correlated at rest free recall scores. Analyzes were corrected head motion physiological BOLD signal. Results Participants most female (66%) black (79%) mean age was 49 years‐old (±13.9). score on 27.2 (±10.7) out 48 points. found a significant correlation between hippocampus right parahippocampal gyrus, insula basal ganglia. we did not find association Conclusions Illiterate have lack scores might be associated low brain reserve this group individuals.

Categorical perception of speech sounds in illiterate adults.
Children affected by dyslexia exhibit a deficit in the categorical perception of speech sounds, characterized by both poorer discrimination of between-category differences and by better discrimination of within-category differences, compared to normal readers. These categorical perception anomalies might be at the origin of dyslexia, by hampering the set up of grapheme-phoneme correspondences, ...
متن کاملHippocampal synaptic connectivity in phenylketonuria.
In humans, lack of phenylalanine hydroxylase (Pah) activity results in phenylketonuria (PKU), which is associated with the development of severe mental retardation after birth. The underlying mechanisms, however, are poorly understood. Mutations of the Pah gene in Pah(enu2)/c57bl6 mice result in elevated levels of phenylalanine in serum similar to those in humans suffering from PKU. In our stud...
متن کاملAlterations in Hippocampal Functional Connectivity in patients with Mesial Temporal Sclerosis
Introduction: Medial temporal sclerosis (MTS) is a form of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE). It is typically characterized by structural alterations in hippocampus (HC) and related mesial temporal lobe (MTL) network. Resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) is considered an ideal technique in quantifying the dysfunction and maladaptation in MTL network. It is well- dem...
متن کاملEffects of resveratrol on memory performance, hippocampal functional connectivity, and glucose metabolism in healthy older adults.
Dietary habits such as caloric restriction or nutrients that mimic these effects may exert beneficial effects on brain aging. The plant-derived polyphenol resveratrol has been shown to increase memory performance in primates; however, interventional studies in older humans are lacking. Here, we tested whether supplementation of resveratrol would enhance memory performance in older adults and ad...
متن کاملReduced hippocampal functional connectivity in Alzheimer disease.
OBJECTIVE To determine if functional connectivity of the hippocampus is reduced in patients with Alzheimer disease. DESIGN Functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging was used to investigate coherence in the magnetic resonance signal between the hippocampus and all other regions of the brain. PARTICIPANTS Eight patients with probable Alzheimer disease and 8 healthy volunteers. RESU...
